MonaVie – A Great Business Opportunity?
As part of the MonaVie compensation plan, every distributor who reaches Black Diamond is given their own, personal, Black Diamond documentary. The documentary is professionally filmed, posted on the MonaVie website, and charts each individual’s success story with MonaVie. Viewing these videos is quite inspirational. Multi-millionaire distributors take the chance to show off their mansions, their sports cars, their swimming pools and golf courses, their foreign holidays, and their disposable income. They all wax lyrical about MonaVie, and tell of how the company has made all their wildest dreams come true.
But scratch underneath the surface of these videos, and several cracks in the stories begin to appear. All may not be as it seems with MonaVie. Many of the stories contain elements which are quite disturbing. All share one thing in common – that nothing was going to stop these people from achieving their goals and reaching the top. But how many sacrifices are acceptable before the success starts to become slightly hollow? What if the only way to reach the top is to alienate your nearest and dearest friends and family forever?
In 1964 The Beatles sang that ‘Money Can’t Buy Me Love’. Nearly 50 years on, could it be true that MonaVie are encouraging distributors to sacrifice love for money? Just how lonely is it at the top of MonaVie?
Problems Associated With The MonaVie Business
The problems traditionally associated with network marketing are well known, and not by any means restricted to MonaVie. Some criticisms may be justified, others are not, but in any case, in order to succeed network marketers are usually encouraged to appeal to their warm markets, or in other words, their friends, family and neighbours. The idea behind this is that they will all share in your success, and that you will all succeed together. As one MonaVie millionaire puts it – ‘I’m travelling the world with MonaVie and I’m taking my friends with me!’ When this model works like its supposed to, as in the cases of most of the Black Diamond Distributor documentaries, then it is impossible to criticize it. But the problem is, for the huge majority of MonaVie distributors, success wont come quite this easily.
The problem with this model is that it is making a massive assumption that your friends and family are going to be as enthusiastic about the product and the opportunity as you are. What happens if they are not? What happens when you’re enthusiasm towards your warm market starts to become annoying? How long will it take before you alienate yourself from your friends and family?
How Your MonaVie Business Could Alienate Your Family And Friends
The thing is that all the MonaVie success documentaries naturally focus on the people for whom everything has worked out perfectly, but in the real world these people are in the overwhelming minority. And even then, for those who are successful, some of the documentaries betray sales techniques which could make many people feel uneasy. In one video, a successful Black Diamond distributor is seen standing with her young son, who appears to be elementary school aged. She asks him, ‘What do you do every time a new friend comes over and their mommy is not selling MonaVie? What do you do?’ To which the child replies ‘I ask them to sign up!’
Another women sits with her husband and jokes, ‘Have we ever really had anybody say no? Maybe two people, and as they walked out the door they said we’re probably going to kick ourselves, and I said you are! Because I’m going to go and do doughnuts in your front yard!’ Whilst this comment might be meant in jest, it still doesn’t reflect well on the sales techniques of this woman. It suggests that she is ruthless and forceful, and whilst it might have brought her great success it troubles me that people can be so aggressive towards people who are supposed to be their closest friends and family. A lucky few people may be able to get away with it, but the concerning aspect is what will happen when it doesn’t work – peolpe may be left with no money AND no friends.
Lonely At The Top?
The question which this presents is how much pressure it is appropriate to exert on others in order to make sales and recruit people into your business? Its not a question of business, its a question of morality. At what point does getting your young child to pressurise his friends into trying to sell MonaVie to their parents stop being adorable and start to become offensive? When does making a joke about causing damage to someone else’s property just because they haven’t joined your business stop being a joke and start becoming quite sinister? More importantly, by allowing these documentaries to be published on their website, are MonaVie in fact promoting this ruthless ‘sell at all costs’ attitude which could lead to many people losing their friends and family forever?
‘Tastes Like Money’
Another problem with this type of selling is when the product becomes subordinate to the business – in other words when distributors start selling their businesses to others based on how much money they could make by recruiting more people into the business, and not by focusing on the attributes of the product. This is pyramid selling, and it is illegal. But when people start to chase the millionaire lifestyle this is often one of the things they will find themselves doing. Beware, though, pyramid schemes are illegal for a reason and inevitably, if the business isn’t backed up with a solid and profitable product, it will collapse.
There is no doubt that MonaVie do have a good product, but are distributors focusing on this, or are they cutting corners and trying to get to the top by recruiting people into the business on false promises? In one of the documentaries, a Black Diamond Distributor sips from a glass of MonaVie before exclaiming ‘mmmm…tastes of money!’. Comments like this seriously undermine consumer confidence in MonaVie and their distributors, and it poses the question as to whether MonaVie are condoning this sort of behaviour by displaying these videos on their website?
The Solution To The Problem
All is not lost for MonaVie, however. Network marketing is moving away from the traditional ideas of only focusing on your warm market, and is encouraging people to use the internet to spread the net wider, and to start to sell your product to people who really want it. This immediately solves all your problems. No longer do you have to alienate friends, family and neighbours by attacking them with aggressive sales pitches for a product they don’t want, but instead you can generate leads that are genuinely interested in the MonaVie product instead of simply a get-rich-quick scheme. By using the internet to generate leads you are focusing your sales on interested parties, avoiding the perils of pyramid selling, and leaving uninterested members of your friends and family in peace to enjoy their lives.
Exploding Your Business Online
So to return to the questions posed at the top of this article, we asked is it possible to get to the top of MonaVie without alienating all your friends and family, and without employing aggressive and sinister sales techniques?
The answer is clearly yes. Many of the Black Diamonds in the documentaries have become millionaires simply by getting their family and friends involved in the business, and this is great if it works, but for most of you this is not the way to go. For the majority of people, trying to sell to family and friends is going to cause more trouble than it is worth, and in the worst case scenario it could lead to the breakdown of relationships which you have spent years building up. No amount of success is worth that risk.
The Truth About The MonaVie Business Opportunity
For most people, success in MonaVie is likely to come by learning how to find interested leads on the internet. Not only does this cut out the need to pressurise people with aggressive sales pitches, since the leads will contact you and as such will already be interested in the product, but it also means you can move your focus away from your family and friends, thus keeping your home and your business lives separate. If your warm market love the product as much as you do, and want to become involved, then by all means let them! This article is not aimed at dissuading anyone from turning away interested parties, and if a family member likes the product they are as good a customer as anyone.
But if you really want to explode your MonaVie business, and have the cameras round at your mansion filming you in your swimming pool, then the key to success is not your family, but your computer.
